Better Quality of Life for the Incontinent Patient.
Up to now, a damaged sphincter has meant only two options – the application of an artificial anus or the constant use of diapers by the patient. In both cases, the quality of life is strongly impaired. In close cooperation with DLR, DUALIS and the Self-Help Association for Incontinence, IMTEK (Institute for Microsystems Engineering) is working on the first sphincter prosthesis which hands over control to the patient to decide when to empty the bladder and bowel. The use of this modern technology shall lead to a clear improvement in patient quality of life:
- Implantable due to minimum overall size
- Easy to use due to telemetric control management
- Wireless power supply to the prosthesis
- High-performance, reliable micropump
